A NOTE FROM SCHOOL NURSE

It is common for children to develop heat rash during the hotter months. Heat rash is harmless but may be itchy and cause children to scratch excessively. Heat rash occurs when the sweat ducts are blocked due to an increase in body temperature, sweat, and humidity. Armpits, back, chest, groin, back of knees, and elbow creases are areas where heat rash usually forms.
Heat rash eventually goes away on its own once the body cools down and stops sweating. Calamine lotion or an over-the-counter steroid cream can be applied to reduce itching and inflammation.
Below are some tips for preventing heat rash:

  1. Wear lightweight, breathable fabrics, such as cotton.
  2. Stays in a cool place during the hottest time of day.
  3. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin cool and prevent dehydration.
